First time using a smart ethanol fireplace? Get familiar with its controls before the first flame. A remote or app makes operation convenient, but someone still needs to watch the fireplace and understand each stage.

Prepare, operate and cool down

  1. Know the controls
  2. Prepare the room
  3. Watch the flame
  4. Shut down and cool

Before the first use

Have the installer hand over the model manual, final installation drawing and any outstanding work. Identify the filling point, normal start and stop controls, warning indicators and cooling requirements. Keep this information where the regular operator can find it.

Check that the flame area is clear, required ventilation openings are unobstructed and children and pets are kept away. Do not start if you see damage, a loose fitted part or fuel outside its intended container.

Fill, then start

Use the fuel and filling equipment specified for the unit. Refill only after shutdown and cooling. Some alcohol flames are hard to see: an apparently empty opening does not mean it is safe to add fuel. NSW Government safety advice also warns against refilling a burning or warm burner.

Prevent drips when disconnecting filling equipment. Clean up spilled fuel before lighting; if it may have entered the casing, keep the unit out of use. The fuel selection checklist explains what to check before buying a bottle.

Give the documented start command and watch the sequence. If buttons do not respond, look for a lock indication described in the manual before assuming a fault. A replacement remote or controller needs its matching instructions. Avoid repeated starts or improvised ignition.

Stop, watch, then let it cool

A stop command is not the same as completed shutdown. Use the normal stop control, confirm all flames are out and follow the required cooling and electrical-isolation sequence. Do this before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Do not use an app to work around a warning. Record the exact message and what happened; the fault response guide explains which details help support.
