A water vapour fireplace and an ethanol fireplace can both look at home in a modern surround. But how do they make the flame? That is the first difference to understand.

Water and light, or burning fuel?

A water vapour fireplace uses illuminated water mist to create a flame-like effect. An ethanol fireplace burns liquid fuel and produces a real flame. A label such as “3D” or “smart” does not tell you which technology is inside.

This changes the consumables and the operating routine. A mist system has water-related filling and cleaning instructions. An ethanol burner needs its approved fuel, ignition, shutdown and refuelling procedure. Never put ethanol into a water-mist reservoir or apply a water-system cleaning method to a fuel tank.

Does the flame effect heat the room?

The appearance of mist and light does not establish heating output. If the appliance also provides heating, identify that function and its documented rating separately.

An ethanol flame releases heat, but its useful output and room suitability still depend on the actual burner and installation. A photograph cannot answer either heating question.

Use the right maintenance route

A mist or lighting fault is different from an ethanol ignition or fuel-system fault. Match the manual to the appliance before following maintenance advice, and use only its specified consumable.

For an ethanol unit, the fuel selection guide explains what to check on a bottle. It is not a water-quality guide for a mist system. Similar-looking flame effects can need very different care.
