Before approving a built-in bioethanol fireplace, assemble a coordinated set of model drawings, installation instructions, configuration details and destination-specific compliance evidence. The practical test is simple: can the architect, buyer, installer and future operator identify the same appliance and the same approved requirements?

A useful submittal package answers that question before an order or surround fabrication is released. This guide explains what to request, how to review it and where the SXFireplace public resources fit into the process.

Start with the exact unit and its intended use

Open the document register with a project tag, such as “Reception FP-01.” Record the manufacturer, series, exact model or SKU, quantity, finish and any selected options. Add the installation country and location, and identify whether the space is residential, hospitality or another commercial setting.

Keep a sketch or elevation beside that entry. Show whether the proposal uses a bare burner, a framed insert or a complete fireplace. A drawing for a base burner can leave out features of the complete assembly, so ask the supplier to confirm which drawing applies to the delivered configuration.

For an early-stage brief, the model can remain undecided. Mark that entry “selection pending” and use it to collect questions. Avoid issuing an approximate product choice as a final construction reference.

Know what each document can establish

A catalogue, family manual and installation drawing serve different purposes. Keeping those roles clear helps a team spot missing information without assuming every download is construction-ready.

  • Catalogue or product page: identifies candidate products, nominal sizes and advertised options
  • Model or assembly drawing: identifies the selected configuration and its dimensional interfaces
  • Installation manual: provides the applicable requirements and procedures for that model
  • Project coordination drawing: shows how the appliance fits into the actual room, surround and service arrangement
  • Declaration, test report or certification record: supplies evidence to review against the product and destination requirements
  • Quotation and order acknowledgement: record the equipment, options, documents and commercial scope being purchased

SXFireplace’s Technical Resources page currently provides English manuals for SXKT Smart, SXRX Smart and SXRX Manual families, plus six standard linear-unit reference PDFs. The page identifies these references as planning material and calls for confirmation of the exact unit and approved drawing before cutting. Use that distinction throughout the project.

What should a fireplace drawing show?

Ask for the views and dimensions that the project team needs to coordinate the work. A perspective image may explain the design, but the drawing package should make the physical interfaces readable.

Overall size, opening and support

Request the overall dimensions of the supplied assembly and separately identify the required opening. Confirm units, dimension reference points, support or fixing details, tolerances and any associated components.

For a recessed installation, the reviewer should be able to distinguish the visible opening from the space needed behind the finished surface. Record the drawing number and revision used by the fabricator. If a dimension is missing, raise a written query instead of measuring a screenshot or scaling a marketing image.

Surrounding materials and clearances

The coordinated plan and sections should identify adjacent construction, finish layers and relevant nearby objects. Ask the manufacturer to state the clearances and material requirements applicable to the exact product and arrangement.

Check the complete finish assembly, including substrates and adhesives where relevant, with the responsible professionals. Keep clearance requirements separate from aesthetic gaps. A narrow shadow line in an elevation does not establish a safe separation.

Manufacturer guidance illustrates why model-specific review matters: EcoSmart Fire’s burner installation guidance separates installation settings and burner models, and asks for drawings to be reviewed against its requirements. Its dimensions apply to its own products; they should not be transferred to an SXFireplace installation.

Air, power, controls and access

Include the room information and ventilation questions needed by the manufacturer and local project professionals. Where the selected appliance needs electricity, request its supply requirements and coordinate the connection and access arrangement. Do not infer electrical requirements from the word “bioethanol.”

Mark how the operator reaches the controls and performs the model’s permitted fuel-handling procedure. Also establish the route for inspection, maintenance and eventual removal. Confirm optional connectivity or integration in writing, including the supplied components and who is responsible for commissioning them.

These are coordination questions. Final values and procedures must come from the applicable product documentation and local requirements.

Review compliance evidence against the ordered model

Create one register entry for every declaration, report or certificate being relied upon. Record:

  • Document title, reference number, issuer and date
  • Manufacturer and product model coverage
  • Standard and edition stated in the document
  • Tested configuration, limitations and conditions
  • Intended destination and the person responsible for assessing applicability

A document for a related model should trigger a question about coverage. Keep the supplier’s clarification with the register rather than treating a family resemblance as evidence.

Where a UL certification claim is part of the proposal, use UL Solutions’ Product iQ information to identify a verification route, or contact the issuer with the certification reference. UL Standards & Engagement describes UL 1370 as a standard for unvented alcohol-fuel-burning decorative appliances. Mentioning that standard does not establish that any SXFireplace model is certified to it.

The responsible local professionals should determine the approvals and evidence required for the project. This checklist does not certify a product or installation.

Use a short document register

A practical register can be a spreadsheet or a controlled schedule within the project documents. Give each record these fields:

  1. Project tag and exact ordered configuration
  2. Document type, number, revision and issue date
  3. Supplier or author
  4. Intended use: preliminary review, coordination or the agreed construction-release stage
  5. Reviewer and outstanding comments
  6. Response due date and closure evidence

For example, “FP-01 / installation drawing / revision B / opening dimension awaiting supplier confirmation” is actionable. “Fireplace drawing received” leaves the fabrication team unsure what they may use.

When a model, finish assembly, control package or installation location changes, check which documents need another review. Circulate the revised set and make the superseded version visibly obsolete in the project system.

Place review gates before expensive commitments

The project team should agree its approval process at the outset. The following four gates provide a useful starting structure.

Before ordering

Confirm the model, quantity, options, destination and document deliverables. Clarify whether technical review or project drawings are included in the quoted scope. Resolve conditions that could change the product selection.

Before surround fabrication

Check that the coordinated drawing has addressed the opening, support, clearances, materials, services and access. Close technical queries and identify the approved revision. The stone or joinery supplier should not have to choose between conflicting dimensions.

Before commissioning

Compare the delivered unit and its identification with the order and document set. Record substitutions or damage for resolution. Have the responsible professionals confirm that the installation is ready for commissioning under the applicable instructions.

Before handover

Provide the matching manual, final drawings, relevant evidence, operating responsibilities and support information. Record who received the handover and any unresolved restrictions.

Fuel handling deserves explicit attention in this review. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s warning about pooled-liquid-fuel fire pits explains the flame-jetting hazard when fuel is added in the presence of a flame, which can be hard to see. That warning concerns the product category it describes; it is not a determination about a particular SXFireplace model. For the specified appliance, the handover must preserve its exact fuel, refuelling, cooldown and operating instructions.

Send a brief that can be answered

To request an SXFireplace document package, provide the model or design concept, desired size, quantity, destination and installation drawings available so far. Name the documents you need and explain the next decision: product selection, quotation, coordination or fabrication review.

Start with the technical resource library, review planning information for architects, then request project support. Identify missing information explicitly so the response can address the actual decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build from a fireplace construction drawing PDF found online?

Only use a document for construction when the responsible parties have confirmed its applicability and release status for the selected unit and project. SXFireplace’s public model reference PDFs are labelled for planning and require further confirmation before cutting.

Are CAD or BIM files required for every project?

The required formats depend on the project workflow and supplier availability. Request the files your team needs and confirm availability for the exact model. A useful 3D model still needs to be coordinated with applicable dimensional and installation requirements.

Can the nominal burner length be used as the cutout?

Do not assume that it can. Ask for the opening dimensions and their reference points on the applicable drawing, including any frame, enclosure or accessory that changes the assembly.

Does a test report approve the whole installation?

A report supplies evidence within its stated scope. The project team still needs to check model coverage, configuration, installation requirements and destination applicability.

What should happen if the supplier changes the model after approval?

Reopen the affected reviews before accepting the change for installation. Update the order record, drawings, manual references and evidence register so the delivered unit and final document set agree.
